4.1)
Twitter: an Introduction
Twitter is an extremely
popular online micro blogging service, that has gained a very large user
following. The Twitter graph is a directed social network, where each user
chooses to follow certain other users. Each user submits periodic status
updates, known as tweets that consist of short messages limited in size to 140
characters. These updates typically consist of personal information about the
users, news or links to content such as images, video and articles. The posts
made by a user are automatically displayed on the user’s profile page, as well
as shown to his followers. A retweet is a post originally made by one user
that is forwarded by another user. Retweets are useful for propagating
interesting posts and links through the Twitter community. Twitter is first emerged
in 2006, at a time when nobody really knew what micro blogging was. Early
adopters had experimented with several usages when Twitter really took off at a
south by southwest conference in 2007. Six years after its launch, the platform
has become the world's leading micro blogging service, attracting almost 500
million registered user and 88 million active users per month (DIJCK, The culture of connectivity)
Over the past half
decade, 'twitting' has sported multiple meaning, from sending instant short messages
to creating a live stream of instant opinion. Twitter's technological design
was modified several times, and while establishing its brand name, the platform
experimented with various business models and governance strategies to run
connectivity into a source of sustainable income.
4.2 Symbolic Language of Twitter
The Social Networking
site Facebook gradually imputed expansive meanings to the online activates of
"Sharing", "Liking" and "friending;" in the case
of Twitter, a similar evolution took place with regards to social practices now
known as "following" and "trending".
Twitter rapidly managed
to occupy a social networking niche that Facebook and MySpace didn't really
serve. A significant expansion of Twitter's architecture was the
implementation, in late 2008, of "Trending Topics"- a feature that
enabled users to group post together by topic by articulating certain words or
phrases prefixed with a hash tag sign (#). From now on, users could actively
trend certain topics or passively track topics. All trending topics are
instantly indexed and filtered, before they become visible in the
"trending" sidebar. The retweet function was rolled out in 2009;
retweeting- users reposting interesting tweets from their friends using the
letter RT followed by the @ sign and a user name- became a very popular
function, generation enormous amounts of traffic on twitter. An important part
of the push for integrated use was the promotion of Twitter's mocrosyntax as a
new sort of currency. The symbols @ (referring to an online name) and #
(denoting a searchable topic) and RT (Retweet) were quickly absorbed into
everyday communication.
4.3 What is Twitter Trending?
To join, all user do is post a tweet that includes the exact word or phrase as it appears in the Trends list, as with a hash tag. In trends where large volumes of micro-bloggers participate, user might not easily find your post in the list, but your own followers will surely be able to see what you've posted. User might also want to join a Twitter Party or a Tweet Chat and exchange thoughts with like-minded micro-bloggers.
A trend happens to hash tag-driven topics that have been used in conversations the most number of times. Because this can be abused by marketers, Twitter has released a set of rules, and immediately filters out posts that are blatantly selling a hashtag or do not make any sense at all just to reach trending status. For example #CaDebate is currently running hashtag trending of Nepal.
4.4 Current Scenario in Nepal:
Twitter is open for everyone. Twitter has 271 Million monthly active users worldwide, and is rapidly growing in South Asia. Nepal has 1 Million above Twitter users. According to Nepal telecommunication organization Ncell 1.7 Million users have accessed the Twitter via Ncell under the Twitter Zero scheme. (tech.aakarpost.com, 14 august 2015)
According to some
reports, there are around 3.0 Million Twitter users in Nepal, among them 1
Million users are active.
Citizen, leader, public
figure, private and public company/organization, and governments embraced
twitter as a tool for connecting individuals and communities of users- a
platform that empowers public to voice opinions and emotions that helps stage
public dialogues, and supports groups or ideas to garner attention.
Twitter users tend to be perceived as a mass of mostly young active users who feel empowered by the service in their individual contributions to dialogues or in their collective efforts to influence public debates.
4.5) Twitter
Trending in Nepal
Twitter hasn't given the country hastag trends of Nepal till now. Nepal is small country so, only few number of Nepal related hastag trend spread worldwide. According to known person of this field, Nepali worldwide spread trend are, #Earthquakenepal, #ModivisitNepal, #Gohomeindianmedia etc.
Nepali twitter users are actively debating in different issues, sharing
feeling, his/her activity, experience, emotion etc. Most users actively
participating in twitter, some user tweets a dozen above tweet in a day, but
they hasn't found serious issue and follow the current trending. They are tweet
only for tweet and entertainment. Another side, some users are seriously
debating in twitter on current agenda with hashtag.
According to Ujjwal Acharya (2013) survey, out of 625 residents, 13%
were females and 87% were males. One in 10 Twitter user maintains multiple
Twitter accounts. Three-fourth of Nepali Twitter users tweets from within
Nepal- most from Kathmandu (68) followed by lalitpur (7%) Bhaktapur (4%),
Chitwan (3%), and Kaski (2%). So, Most Twitter users believe (89%) that Twitter
is a strong medium of communication. #CaDebate is currently running trends of
Nepal; it is related to new constitution and constitution draft. There many user
are participating and they arguing and giving suggestion on the way of multipal
view.
In the April earthquake Nepal, #GoHomeIndianMedia trends started from
Nepal, and spread worldwide. At that time People felt humiliated and mislead by
the Hindi-language-news channels from India. Consequently, public sentiment got
reflected through the social media. Intensity of refusal was so strong and
international media noticed that Indian news media had come under fire for its
allegedly insensitive and jingoistic coverage of the earthquake, with
#GoHomeIndianMedia trending across social networks in Nepal.
Soutik (2015), reports for BBC, that by the completion of a week the
hashtag became a top social media trend in Nepal with tens of thousands of
tweets on the subject. Central department of Journalism and mass communication
of Tribhuwan University lecture Kundan Aryal sir cited this on his article, People
complained, according to him (Soutik 2015), that the coverage had been
insensitive and jingoistic, among other things. Many Indian also had supported
to Nepali twitter users and criticize the Indian media.
Later, some Indian audience not only supported Nepal's twitter trending,
moreover they also started a new trend with hashtag #DontComeBackIndianMedia.
One of the tweets said, "Please don't send them back to India, send them
to Mars."
In the earthquake period, #Nepalearthquake hastag happened popular
trends. To search and to know the new updated information of Nepal all people uses and
followed the hashtag in twitter. Likewise, In the SAARC Summit, those Nepali issues
also became popular in twitter.
Anyway, most of the Nepali twitter user has uses twitter for entertainment and time past. For this study I have taken sample for ten users- among them, most of the users tweet like funny and entertainment. They didn't have interactive in serious issues. Most users use twitter for news and information (85%) to understand public opinion on current news (59%), for gossiping (56%), to express feeling (50%), for networking (46%), for professional works (31%) and to spend leisure time (30%).

Likewise, Most popular topic to tweet are social issues (44%), 23
(42%), political (37%), issues related to profession (26%), and media issues
(23%). But mostly Twitter users tweet anything they find ok to tweet (48%)
Former Prime minister
Dr. Baburam Bhattari is also user of twitter. He has (@brb_laldhoj) 234K
followers and he is following 214 people. He has been tweeting about development
and status of constitution making process, current political and social
scenario. He posted all post in Nepali and he tweet/retweets the other website
link those related to own activity and own party activity. During in the
limitation of this study, couldn't found about he didn't have use hashtag till
a month. Although, he is actively participating in twitter daily base and
tweeting in different issues.
Some agenda also sets by twitter, but issue is not control with anyone. Sometimes culture sensitivity and harmony part also affected by twitter users.
Too much fake account
also can found in twitter. So many users hide his/her name and actively
debating in duplicate name.
Anyway, Twitter and
Social networking media is becoming the part of the society. Social network had
narrowed the world and have created impact in so many field like, business,
beauty, agriculture, trade, social service and so on. It is becoming the best
forum and platform for interaction, discussion, grabbing ideas and suggestions
too.
Now days, every government
and private institution are practicing twitter and social site. Nepal police is
also the best example of it. Nepal police is also using the twitter; Nepal police
give the notice and other information also by twitter. In the earthquake period
Nepal police used twitter for rescue of victim and it has given information by twitter. Twitter is made like the an
element of Political leader, actor/actress, lecture, film maker, media person,
public figure, individual person to interaction, discussion, grabbing ideas and
suggestions too.
5) Conclusion
Social media is becoming the essential part of
the society. it has become integral part of human life. Today no one can remain
without posting status, tweeting, posting photos and videos. they share their
problems, progress and achievement, experiences ideas, feelings and emotions.
so tweeting and posting has become habitual. Some agenda also sets by twitter,
but issue is not control with anyone. Sometimes culture sensitivity and harmony
part also affected by twitter users.
